What Is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by the enlargement of male breast tissue, often resulting in a chest that appears swollen, feminine, or uneven. The term originates from Greek meaning “woman-like breasts.”

This condition can cause significant emotional and psychological distress. Many men with gynecomastia feel self-conscious in social situations, avoid fitted clothing, and may even skip activities like swimming, gym workouts, or beach outings.

It is important to distinguish between true gynecomastia (glandular tissue enlargement) and pseudogynecomastia, which is caused primarily by excess fat tissue.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is most commonly linked to a hormonal imbalance between estrogen and testosterone. However, multiple contributing factors may play a role.

  • Hormonal changes during puberty or aging
  • Obesity and increased fat-related estrogen production
  • Use of anabolic steroids or testosterone supplements
  • Prescription medications (certain antidepressants, heart medications, etc.)
  • Alcohol, marijuana, and recreational drug use
  • Thyroid, liver, or kidney disease
  • Tumors affecting hormone-producing glands (rare cases)

Gynecomastia may develop at any stage of life, but it is most common during adolescence and in men over the age of 50.

How Is Gynecomastia Treated?

While some cases may improve by addressing underlying medical or hormonal causes, gynecomastia surgery (male breast reduction) remains the most effective and permanent treatment.

Surgical correction removes excess glandular tissue, fat, and sometimes skin to create a flatter, more masculine chest contour.

Gynecomastia Surgery Procedure

Gynecomastia surgery is typically performed as an outpatient procedure under local or general anesthesia depending on the severity of the condition.

Liposuction Technique

Liposuction is used to remove excess fatty tissue through small incisions using a thin cannula. This technique is ideal for patients with primarily fatty gynecomastia.

Surgical Excision Technique

When glandular tissue or excess skin is present, surgical excision is required. An incision is typically made around the edge of the areola to remove dense breast tissue and reshape the chest.

In many cases, both liposuction and excision techniques are combined for optimal results.

Benefits of Gynecomastia Surgery

  • Flatter, more masculine chest appearance
  • Improved body confidence and self-esteem
  • Better fit in clothing and improved wardrobe options
  • Permanent removal of excess glandular tissue
  • Enhanced comfort during physical activity
  • Reduced self-consciousness in social settings
  • Improved posture and body image
  • Short and manageable recovery period

Recovery After Gynecomastia Surgery

Recovery time varies depending on the surgical technique used. Most patients return to non-strenuous work within 1–2 weeks.

Swelling and bruising are common during the initial recovery phase. A compression garment is typically worn for several weeks to support healing and improve chest contour.

Full recovery may take several weeks to a few months, but most patients resume normal daily activities within 4–6 weeks. Strenuous exercise should be avoided for at least 2–3 weeks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I a candidate for gynecomastia surgery?

You may be a candidate if you are bothered by enlarged male breast tissue, are in good overall health, maintain a stable weight, and do not smoke or use drugs.

Are the results permanent?

Yes, results are long-lasting. Once glandular tissue is removed, it typically does not return, provided you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.

What is recovery like?

Most patients return to work within 1–2 weeks. Final results become more visible as swelling subsides over several weeks to months. Liposuction-only procedures typically involve a faster recovery than excision surgery.
